Transformational Coaching Model
Coaching Perspective -A coach uses a holistic system of identification and a transformational model of change; the coach is an expert who works in raising the client’s self-awareness all while empowering, uplifting, and enlightening the client. The coach holds the client accountable in their part of the transformational process as well as identifying their role in their story. Through challenging the client and helping them recognize what is holding them back. The coach will work on establishing solutions, strategies through encouragement, support, and promoting self-changing of behaviors also changing to a more positive mindset. The coach will embrace the client’s learning style by honoring the client’s upbringing environment and how it has influenced the client’s mindset. Transformational coaching will focus on self-empowerment of the individual by identifying the client’s belief that have created fears, barriers and deterrents in their lives that have stopped them in creating the life they want to live.
Self-Awareness- A life coach has to be able to explore and guide the client to see the big picture of the whole story. Using probing questions that can engage the client to open up and discuss what they truly are feeling, what they want, or need in their lives. By using tools that promote further exploration and incite critical thinking. Consciously examining how aware is the client is on how certain behaviors, self-prophecy, fears, self-defeat, and learned behaviors that has been taught in their life journey that has affected their choices by triggering self-sabotage, or fear of success.
Perspectives & Attitudes Produce Behaviors- A life coach must be sensitive to the needs, values, and beliefs of the client in order to assist the individual in moving forward in their life journey. Understanding where they are coming from in terms of religion, upbringing, life experiences, and past failures, the life coach can reverently reflect on the client’s needs, values, and beliefs system. The life coach can use these as a tool in which to guide the client and achieve progress through the client’s own individual perspective. If the life coach fails to respect these areas of the individual will lose the Coach’s trust.
Exploring options and taking action- Empowering Positive Choices- Once the client is able to understand themselves and reach self-awareness. About who they truly are, what they believe in, and what they need or want to create more or less in their lives. They will be open to take risks by taking action steps towards their goals. During this phase they will either experience pre-contemplation or the motivation to change or take action. The life coach will then work with the client in exploring options and guide the client in developing an action plan that is person centered and verbally created by the client. This may be a difficult transition for some clients to be in and they may feel stuck due to past experiences. As a result, it can affect the client by creating barriers that prevents them from taking a proactive action due to past failures, fear, and self-defeating beliefs. The life coach will then counteract this by helping the client identify those negative patterns of thinking and using imagery to focus on future positive outcomes. Therefore, the life coach will challenge the client to continue to explore their core beliefs, and their own self-defeating persona by supporting the client to release whatever is acting as a deterrent in their life and release it from the inside out in order to effectively move forward.
Empowering questions: Tools to Equipped You For Life- The next step for the life coach is to ask empowering questions that can incite the client to think proactively. By asking empowering questions it will be a catalyst for the client to reach their own findings or solutions. For example, questions like: “what you think is a solution to this dilemma that keeps you stagnant in your career? And “what do you need that can help you to take the first step towards a change in career? These type of questions throws the ball back into the client’s hands while the Life Coach waits to receive back the client’s own conscious solution to their own difficulty. The focus is placed on the individual client in order to assist him/her to recognize and to reach a sense of empowerment that will allow them to move forward and take positive action.
Personal Growth: Growing both inside and outside- The ultimate challenge for the client is to reach the self fulfilment of personal growth in all the areas of his/hers life that have been unbalance or stagnant. The Life Coach will be mindful of the client’s progress and celebrate all success. The focal point of transformational coaching is to instill hope, faith, motivation, and guidance via transformational empowerment to face what most challenges the client with honor, respect, integrity, and accountability with the outmost goal in mind to reach self-empowered living.
